Winter Environmental Tip
brought to you by Towamencin's Environmental Advisory Council
Winter/Early Spring Gardening Tasks: Your garden may still be asleep, but you can work on some important activities to be ready when it wakes up. In winter, you can add dried leaves around your plants. Not only is this a great way to add organic matter to your soil, it’s also a sustainable way to keep the plant material produced by your property on your property. Early spring, you can cut back old stems and seed heads on your perennials before new growth emerges, both which support wildlife during the winter months. After you cut the stems, just leave them in your garden so overwintering insects can re-emerge and birds can use the stems and twigs as nesting materials. Got rid of all of your leaves and stems last year? This coming fall, make sure to shred and save your leaves and keep stems and seed heads in place – the plants and wildlife will thank you!
