Late Winter / Early Spring Environmental Tips

brought to you by Towamencin's Environmental Advisory Council

Close Doors and Vents in Unused Rooms: Have a guest room but fewer guests these days? A storage room or your kids are back at college? Whatever the reason, if there’s a room in your house that isn’t used very often, you’re wasting valuable energy heating it in the winter months. What can you do? Close off all vents in the room and shut all doors. This will prevent you from paying to heat unoccupied spaces. Want to do virtual yoga in that room once a week? Electric space heaters are an energy efficient way to heat closed-off areas that you only occupy for short periods of time (remember that space heaters should not be left unattended).

Plant Some Cool Crops: Get an early start on your vegetable garden by growing cool-season crops! These plants thrive in cooler temperatures and are perfect to plant in mid-March through the beginning of April. Most cool-season crops grow from seeds that you would plant directly in the ground, instead of needing to start them indoors. Easy peasy! Mid-March you could start with peas, cabbage, and turnips. Move on to radishes, carrots, and lettuce in late March. You can also try additional greens like Swiss chard or spinach in late March or early April. Bonus: eating a plant-based diet also helps to reduce your carbon footprint and you know where your food is coming from!

Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy’s Stream Clean-up - April 2nd
