Tennis-Lukens Cemetery Restoration Project Update

The restoration project at the Tennis-Lukens Cemetery is progressing ahead of schedule and has already shown significant improvement. The Township is working with Roth Cemetery Services for the project. Restoration efforts began in late April and were completed in early May. Work included repairing and stabilizing gravestones and monuments by filling cracks, patching damaged areas, resetting stones, and straightening leaning markers. Grass seed was also applied around the restored areas. The next phase of the project will include applying a specialized cleaning solution to the monuments and gravestones to help brighten and preserve their appearance.

An informational sign will also be installed at the cemetery in June to highlight the site’s historical significance. The 0.75-acre cemetery was established around 1749 and was used by several Quaker families, who settled nearby before the American Revolutionary War. Some gravestones date back to the early 1700s, and the cemetery is also the final resting place of several Towamencin Revolutionary War veterans.
