Beginning this May, the U.S. Treasury Department will distribute
rebate checks to more than 130 million households across the country
as part of the federal economic stimulus package approved by
Congress, Rep. Kate Harper (R-Montgomery) announced today.
However, millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage
workers who are not typically required to file a federal tax return
could potentially miss out on the rebate if they do not file a 2007
federal tax return.
Individuals must file a 2007 federal tax return in order to collect
their rebate payments. For these individuals it is important to know
that they must also show at least $3,000 of income, which can
include earned income, Social Security, Railroad Retirement benefits
and certain benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Other income restrictions apply. Single tax filers must have 2007
adjusted gross income (AGI) below $75,000 and joint filers must have
AGI below $150,000.
Single filers with AGI below $75,000 will get rebates of as much as
$600. Couples with AGI below $150,000 will receive rebates of up to
$1,200.
Although the deadline to file an income tax return is April 15,
individuals filing for the purpose of collecting a rebate payment
only will have until Oct. 15. Even if an individual misses that
deadline, they will have a second opportunity when filing next
year's income tax return.
People who have already filed a return do not need to submit
additional paperwork.
The IRS announced recently that checks will be distributed as early
as May 2 and expect that 25 percent of filers should receive a check
within the first three weeks. Most taxpayers will receive their
check before July 11.
