Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced
that Allentown Road will be closed and detoured between Orvilla
Road and Weikel Road in Towamencin Township, Montgomery County
beginning Wednesday, January 6, for roadway reconstruction.
Allentown Road will be closed for approximately seven months.
During construction, Allentown Road through traffic will be
detoured over Orvilla Road, Route 63 (Welsh Road), and Valley
Forge Road. Local access will be maintained up to the
construction zone. Motorists are advised to allow extra time
when travel through the area. The work is part of PennDOT’s $3.3
million project to realign and improve the intersection of
Allentown, Troxel and Orvilla roads.
PennDOT’s
contractor has been working since April 2009 to realign Troxel
Road to a new location so that it lines up with Orvilla Road at
the intersection with Allentown Road. In addition, left turn
lanes are being added on all four legs of the intersection; a
westbound right turn lane is being added on Allentown Road; and
new traffic signals will be installed at the intersection.
Allentown Road carries approximately 14,000 vehicles a day
through its intersections with Troxel and Orvilla roads, while
the average daily traffic volume on Troxel Road at the
intersection is 3,300 and Orvilla Road is 5,500.
