Road Construction & Updates

  • Milling & repaving along Sumneytown Pike - Contractors for Montgomery County are scheduled to start milling Sumneytown Pike (county-owned road) between Valley Forge Rd. and Forty Foot Rd. on Monday December 4th.  Paving will be on Wednesday December 6th. Most of the work will be done at night work from 7 PM to 5 AM, with some day work from 8:30 AM to 6 PM. Duration should be approximately 8 to 10 work days.

  • The Turnpike on-ramp from Towamencin Ave to the toll plaza appears is now open. In June 2000, engineers for the PA Turnpike Commission contacted Towamencin Township advising that they were undertaking evaluations of eight interchanges within the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Region. The Lansdale interchange located within Towamencin Township was one of those selected for study.  Concerned about the already then growing traffic traveling through Towamencin, and with a vision that new development throughout the North Penn and Indian Valley region would bring even greater demands, the Township Board of Supervisors directed the Township Traffic Engineers to study the issue and provide recommendations. Several alternative designs were prepared and presented to the Turnpike Commission. Most included the EZ-Pass slip ramps that were subsequently put in, and the additional “access” drive off Towamencin Avenue on to the interchange.  Prior to this, all traffic had to be funneled through the Sumneytown Pike / Turnpike interchange intersection routinely resulting in traffic back-ups on Sumneytown Pike (in both directions) and Forty Foot Road.  By providing the alternative access and exits, the traffic could be diluted so it did not have to travel through one “funnel.”

  • Allentown Road safety improvements - PennDOT’s traffic Safety Division has responded to the Township’s concern about enhancing safety on Allentown Road between Forty Foot and Derstine roads.  Through a state contract mechanism to implement low cost safety improvements throughout the region, several new caution, warning, and speed limit signs were placed along this area of roadway last week.

Tree Trimming Reminder

Township crews will start trimming tree limbs extending into the street rights-of-way on December 11th 2017. It will take around two weeks to complete, and possibly extend into the first weeks of January if we get any rain or snow. The crews will also remove and dispose of the debris. Should you prefer to have your own arborist or landscaper perform this work at your cost, kindly arrange to have this done prior to December 11th. Should you wish the Township to provide this service, no further action is required on your part. Under Township ordinances, maintaining those street side trees is the responsibility of the property owner. It is a public safety measure that involves trimming branches back to the 14-foot height required to keep them from brushing against vehicles or blocking drivers’ views.
