Establishment of Friendship City
WHEREAS,
the “FRIENDSHIP CITY” Program traces its roots to the
"People-to-People" Program that was inaugurated by the
President of the United States in 1956 to establish greater
friendship and understanding between the people of the
United States and other nations through the medium of direct
personal contact, and
WHEREAS,
many countries have endorsed this program and have joined
with numerous cities of the United States in adopting and
implementing programs for the exchange of ideas and
visitations of people, and
WHEREAS,
the League of Cities and cities, large and small, have
enthusiastically endorsed, accepted and adopted the
FRIENDSHIP CITY concept, and
WHEREAS,
the Township of Towamencin, through its established
governmental body and through its individual citizens,
recognize and endorse this program as a means of
establishing a lasting friendship between the people of
Rawah, Iraq, and the people of Towamencin Township.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of
Supervisors of Towamencin Township that on behalf of the
people of Towamencin Township, this Board does hereby
endorse that a preliminary invitation be extended to the
government and people of the City of Rawah, Iraq to initiate
negotiations by mail and personal contact to plan a program
of activities furthering the implementation of the
"FRIENDSHIP CITY" objectives.
Further, that
the Chairman of the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors
is hereby appointed Honorary Chairman of the Friendship City
Committee and is authorized to appoint additional members of
the committee.
Adopted by the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors on
this 14th day of May 2008.
